Intro:

This game has three main parts, but I am going to focus on the main part of the fame, the story. I’ll talk about the co-op and multiplayer areas also, but the game line is known for its campaign. Most people haven’t heard of the Far Cry line of games, but this one gets it on the board for young gamers everywhere!

PLOT:

This game puts you in the shoes of a Frat boy named Jason Brody who has come to an unknown island to celebrate his brother getting his pilots license. At first, they go skydiving into the wrong part of the island and wind up getting kidnapped by a group of pirates. The leader of these pirates is Vaas. Right off the bat the game gets Epic. You escape and manage to get out, but as you are slipping away, your brother gets shot in the neck. You hold his wound, but to no avail. You sit and hold him as you watch him die in your arms. This game has a way of making the characters vivid, lifelike. I barely met this guy three minutes ago and yet already, I feel like I have actually lost my own brother.

From here, you enter an epic escape scene, which ends with you falling into a river and being saved by a guy named Dennis. Dennis trains you to be a warrior; showing you the way of the island and helping you get weapons. This opening is vital to the game, as it shows you how dynamic of a character Jason is. In the beginning, he is someone who is scared to shoot a gun, let alone shoot a person. As you move through the game though, you see him progress into a more confident person. You go through, saving your friends and end up feeling like a badass. You watch as Jason defeats not only the Pirates, but the islands Darkness by embracing it.

Most of the ways that he changes are subtle. Bit by bit he slowly falls into this Emotionless warrior you see in the end. So much so that he cannot count how many people he killed.

CHARACTERS:

The characters in this game are extremely vivid. Vaas more so than many others. You really get a feeling of his criminal insanity and how, in the end, it rubs off on you. While they are vivid in detail, they are very one dimensional. They don’t change, or do anything really unexpected, but they still feel real. They do things that may seem weird, but you get to see different sides of them, kind of like a real person.

The character you get to understand and know the best is your own. You watch as he progresses away from a college frat boy. From the very beginning you feel as if you are Jason. You also feel like you are taking over the island. He gets the job done, saving his friends, but as he does so, he pushes the limits of sanity. He is also no stranger to drugs. These aren’t the normal drugs like coke and meth, but a hallucinogenic drug given to you by natives of the island, the Rakyats. These drugs are supposed to help you on your quest to save your friends and reclaim the island.

As you play, you really get the feeling that if it were you, you would do the same things and play the hero. The hero who, as he spills more blood, slowly loses his sanity.

GAME PLAY:

The game play is explosive, making every mission fun. Excluding some of the dumb side-missions where you end up having to kill leopards with a flamethrower, you usually get to do the missions in whatever order you please. You can have any four weapons that you can customize with either stealth or assault options, depending on how you feel. The game is free roam, meaning that you can move anywhere across the island as you please, meaning you have some interesting ways of getting around and to things.

While the game includes a “Fast Travel” feature, you still find yourself exploring the island on foot. There are, also, numerous other forms of transportation included. These include: Jet-skis, hang-gliders and a wing suit.

Another thing this game does right is the boss battles. Most first person shooters don’t have very many (if ANY) boss battles, or the ones included are really lame. More often than not, they are just you shooting at some dude that can take more bullets than normal humans should be able to.  The game has you ‘trip out’ often times before these battles, but it is good. It keeps the game play fresh and makes you want to relay it.  There is also a huge boss battle where you are given a drug by Cintra (the leader of the Rakyats) who calls it “A poison for the weak”. From here, you end up in a temple fighting a 200 foot god with exploding arrows. This is very original, and something you would expect more out of a fantasy game, not a first person shooter like this.

While the shooting mechanics of the game are very clean and well built, you find yourself sneaking up on enemies to use takedowns you’ve learned almost as much as shooting at them.

PRESENTATION:

While the Graphics are amazing, they don’t improve or change during cinematic events like most games. They make up for this by making the game look great at all times. If a person were to watch you from a small distance and did not know it was a game, they would likely think that this was a first person movie or some sort.

The island around you is beautiful, full of tropical animals and plants that will interact with each other and sometimes attack you. The island itself is full of caves and swamps. The environment is alive in a way that most games aren’t. Sometimes, while walking through the forest, you will get pounced on by a tiger, or some other animal and be forced to wrestle it off of you.

The AI people in the game aren’t idiots either, especially as you progress. As you progress through the different missions and levels of difficulty in the game, you notice differences in the characters that many games overlook.

The controls are smooth and well done, easy to understand, with very few bugs. A couple times in the game you may want to take someone down with a takedown, but instead the game will only whack it. This doesn’t happen often.

TONE:

This game makes everything feel real. There are times when you may become devastated because of what happens to a character that you have become attached to in some way (some more than others). The game carries a lot of emotion with it, as any good game should.

You watch as your character becomes more and more numb to the outside world and emotions, because he watches as his friends and family die, or get killed, or shot and left to die, or even tortured. I wouldn’t recommend this game to someone who wants something to play in their spare time, only 20 minutes here or there, because you will get involved in the game and not want to stop.

In the end, there is a choice between the island and your friends. It’s not presented straight forward in a choice between staying or going but in a manner much more dark. Your choice changes EVERYTHING.

MULTI-PLAYER:

The multi-player section of the game puts you in the shoes of Vaas’s pirates or the Rakyat soldiers. While it may not be as developed as well as Call of Duty, it is still a lot of fun. If you want something new, while still being able to shoot at things, then this is it. It isn’t the same crap repackaged under a different name.

CO-OP:

Personally, this is the weakest part of the game. It is the same story, but instead of Jason Brody, you get up to four generic players with biographies and stories we’ve all heard a thousand times. None of them have any special skills or abilities. Just four basic people, basic skills. Nothing more, nothing less. Personally, the only reason to play co-op is for the trophies.

OVERALL:

Besides a weak co-op and some minor bugs in the Multi-player, Far Cry 3 is a great game. You will focus mainly on the story, but it definitely lives up to the hype and makes you feel as if you are actually there in the games.

I give Far Cry 3 a perfect score, a 10/10.
