9/10

Intro:

This game may not be as famous as its predecessor, but it’s definitely as fun. Out of all the attempts Sony made to copy Nintendo, this one definitely hits the sweet spot. Let’s get to the reasons why this game is worth playing.
Game Play:

The game play is different, but fun. Each character has a wide range of attacks that aren’t hard to perform. Each character also has its own combos which they can perform. These aren’t too hard to figure out either. The game was altered from its previous versions, making the goal of this one to gain AP, or All-Star Power. Each character has an AP bar which has three different levels to go through.

AP is used when you perform a super attack on your opponent. The power of the attack differs based upon the amount of AP you have at the time. The level 1 attack is meant to be quick and powerful, going for a quick kill. This is useful if you are at the end of a match and want to get a quick kill in. The downside is how easy it is to stop. One hit at the right time, and your hit is done. The level 2 attack cannot be thwarted by an opponent with a well timed attack, but it can be countered with a level 1 or level 2 attack. The level 2 attack is meant to get you a multi-kill, anywhere from 3 to 5 kills depending on the character and how well you use it. The fact that the attack can be countered brings a new strategy to the game, making you time things right. The level 3 attack can be compared to Smash Bro’s Smash Ball; no matter what you do you are getting kills. Sometimes more than 5 if you are skilled with a character. Personally, it is better than the Smash Ball because you have to earn it. The fact that you have to earn it prevents the match from being ruined by some noob getting it and killing everyone. Basically, if you don’t know how to play, you are going to get kills. Plain and Simple.

Characters:

If you’ve been a Play Station kid most of your life, like I have, then you’ll love the characters. Aside from Fat Princess and Toro Inoue, all of the characters are well known. Even those who aren’t that well known are acceptable because they appeal to the younger females that may play the games, either with older brothers or sisters or at parties. Many games, like this one, include these types of characters for those reasons.

Each character is decent and not very hard to learn, but take a while to master. Each individual character has its own specialty. Take, for example, Ratchet. He is a range character with a large arsenal of weapons. He can perform decent combos and is meant to stay away from the main part of the battle. Dante, on the other hand, is mean to get in the middle of the fight and use combos. He is always in your face, with an endless amount of combos that are meant to be performed at short range. The only character I feel is unfair is Kratos. He has mad range and crazy combos, both of which can be pulled out of nowhere. Also, he gains AP at an unfair rate.

Each character gains AP at different speeds based upon their gameplay. For example, Dante gains AP at a slow rate because he is meant to be in the middle and hitting everything repeatedly. Kratos on the other hand, can get his Level 3 AP in a minute or so.

Sony also tried to keep the controls simple. For example, in the actual game with Cole, his lightning ability is triangle. In All-Stars, it is also triangle. The same goes for Ratchet and his wrench combos being square. It’s little things like this that make the game that much more enjoyable.

Levels and Items:

`           This game does have a decent amount of Levels and Items. As with the characters, they took many of them from other games. The levels have a strange twist to them, as they will change in mid battle to reference another game. For example, Metropolis is the level from the Ratchet and Clank game, and it is peaceful. At first. At some point during the level, the Hydra from God of War comes out and begins to attack you. I found this especially cool because Hydra is a character in Ratchet and Clank as well as God of War. This makes each level enjoyable and will definitely lead your eyes away from the action to see what is going on in the background.

The items all have a different function and will affect your foes in different ways. The only thing I would change about them is the fact that you can’t throw them when you are done with them. Recently, they added an item that allows you to get a kill with AP, but it rarely comes out, preventing the game from being ruined.

Story:

Disappointingly, there is no story mode. Each character has an intro which is just pictures with a lazy narrator. The final boss does not have a backstory, and each character gains a mystical power after beating him that you have no idea how to use or what it is. This sucks, but is mostly expected from the first production. Hopefully, the next ones will have a story mode.

Overall:

Aside from having a weak story and a limit of 20 characters (which leaves out some of the better characters like Crash and Spyro), this game is definitely worth getting if you are a fan of PlayStation. There have been hints that there may be more characters coming out in DLC form soon, which should keep the game fresh and worth coming back to. This game won’t improve the market for PlayStation 3’s but that isn’t what it was for in the first place. The game is fun overall with pleasantly different gameplay and well rounded characters that are meant for fans of PlayStation. For that, We say “Thank you Sony!”

The game gets a 9 out of 10 from me!
